save money for new car

Saving up to be able to purchase a new car sounds like a difficult thing to do; however, it is not impossible only if you plan for it and exert efforts. If you want to buy a new vehicle, it requires more than just spending less so that you can save more. There are certain strategies that you can employ to make this preparation a successful one, considering that a car is also a major purchase. Whether you want to buy a brand new car or a used one, having a solid plan on how you will save and prepare for it is crucial.

Here are some helpful steps on how you can get your finances in order so that you can buy the car of your dreams.

1. Make savings a regular habit

It all starts with developing a habit of saving. Every time you receive your paycheck, you need to set a certain amount aside from it and you need to be consistent with the amount if you are trying to reach a goal. This way, you will know how long it will take before you reach your goal for your savings. If you also have the option in your bank to automatically transfer a part of your salary to your savings account, it will be much better. Also value even the last dollar or penny because these small money can add up.

2. Cut off spending when you go shopping

You can find additional money to add for your car savings when you spend less for shopping. Make sure that when you go to the mall or groceries, you will only buy the things that you need and less of what you want. Keep your eyes on the prize and that is your new vehicle. Better yet, just bring an amount that will just be enough for your needs so that you don’t end up getting tempted and overspending. If you will make a list of all your expenses, there will always be those items that are not really important and can just be taken off. Slash them out and add your extra money to your savings instead.

3. Take advantage of discount coupons when you do grocery shopping

In order to save on groceries, why don’t you take advantage of your discount coupons if you have some. Don’t underestimate the power of saving a few dollars because they are a huge help to your savings especially when accumulated. If you have a credit card, there are also some reward points which you may also use. However, you still need to make sure that you don’t buy something you don’t really need.

4. Reduce your spending on communication and entertainment

If you are currently subscribed to an expensive cell phone plan, you might want to re-evaluate if you really need this plan or you can just choose a cheaper one; or better yet switch to a prepaid plan instead especially when you don’t really need to make a lot of phone calls. If you have a landline, you may also want to think whether you need it because you already have a cell phone and there is the internet which provides you more access to get in touch with people locally and internationally.

When it comes to entertainment, you might have a cable subscription with many channels that you don’t really need. You might need to consider downgrading your package. Now if you spend most of your time outside of home and you barely even watch TV, then you might just need to cancel your cable service all together.

5. Look for ways to earn more money on the side

Aside from cutting down expenditures and setting a part of your salary for savings, why don’t you look for some other ways to earn extra money on the side. You don’t necessarily need to have two full time jobs but maybe you can do a little business or some freelance jobs which can help you earn more. You can look for some old stuff which you can sell online or in your garage. If you have internet at home and own a laptop, there are also plenty of freelance jobs you can find online. There are a lot of earning opportunities if you only know where to find them and if you are determined to achieve your goal of driving home your new car.

6. Cancel your other unnecessary subscriptions and memberships

Do you have a gym membership you are paying for on a monthly basis? Do you really need it? If you want to be fit and maintain good health, you can still do your exercise without having to spend. If the equipment and facilities in the gym are what you are after, well you might just need to do a little sacrifice at the moment while you are still preparing for your car purchase. It does not have to permanent, but for now, maybe you can hit the road for a jog or do some home exercises mean time.
